Birds of Prey

Junior, the turkey vulture, shows his broken wing that healed poorly seven years ago.

Jeff Picton, Director of the Chintimini Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, introduced a number of live raptors, native to the Willamette Valley, to an audience of more than 100 people at the old Clemens Mill site on July 7. His presentation was sponsored by the Education Committee of the Marys Peak Natural Resources Interpretive Center's summer science series: "Science, Music, and Marshmallows."

Before presenting four raptors and their individual volunteer trainers, Mr. Picton awed the gathering of more than 100 people by releasing a rehabilitated green heron back into the wild. The four raptors--a great horned owl, a barn owl, a turkey vulture, and an American kestrel--were then presented to the audience, who asked questions and were allowed to approach near to the birds and their handlers.
