Dear Presidennt Bush, Senator Smith, Senator Wyden, and Representative Walden,
My name is Tiffany Davies, I am 18 years old and live on Roaring Springs
Ranch in Harney County. I am currently a senior at Crane High School.
Local opinions on the topic of Steens Mountain Grazing Issue are:
1) Removing cattle grazing in Steens will cause fuel to build up and create
a fire hazard.
2) This will also degrade the habitat for deer and elk because
the
vegetation will build up and it becomes degraded.
3) Cattle grazing is the most important activity in Harney County. If we
ban cattle grazing, it will have a significant economic impact in the
area.
4) Also, there does not seem to be a monitoring strategy for bans on cattle
grazing. If we do not monitor the impact, how will know if a ban is good
or bad?
Please let me know your opinions on this topic. We are studying local issues in our Agricultural Sciences with Miss Pimm and will print your response on our project website: http://www.orww.org/Harney_Cattle/Student_Reports/2003_Spring_Trip.html
Thank you for taking your time to answer this important question.
Sincerely,
Tiffany Davies
