TOP OREGON SCHOOL WEBSITES SELECTED Schools in Corvallis, Beaver, and Portland Receive Top Awards for 2001-2002 School Year Websites Schools in Eugene, Brookings, Redmond, Newberg, and Pleasant Hill also recognized June 10, 2002 - A panel of five independent judges today announced their selections for this years best Oregon School Websites. Corvallis High School, Nestucca Middle School, and Riverdale Grade School were each given First Place certificates and a check for $1000.00 by competition sponsors. The contest was open to all public schools in Oregon. Competition sponsors are Oregon Websites and Watersheds Project, Inc. (ORWW) and Friends of Paul Bunyan Foundation, Inc. (FOPB). Both organizations are Oregon-based nonprofit corporations with a focus on natural sciences education. Competing schools were judged on the basis of five criteria: 1) homepage design; 2) website functionality; 3) community outreach; 4) local sciences content; and 5) archive plan. Second Place finishers were given a certificate and $500. Third Place finishers received a certificate and $100. Other schools receiving votes were given certificates of Honorable Mention for their websites. Churchill High School (Eugene), Obsidian Middle School (Redmond), and Ewing Young Elementary School (Newberg) were given Second Place awards. Benson High School (Portland), Azalea Middle School (Brookings), and Pleasant Hill Elementary School were selected third. Contest judges represented both Oregon K-12 educators and the sponsoring organizations: Alice Forbes is an associate of David Heil and Associates, Inc., a Portland-area specialist in the development of science-based educational programs, products, and services; Tom Hirons is Vice President of FOPB and President of Mad Creek Logging Co. in Gates; Karey Shawe, representing Oregon Educational Media Association (OEMA), is media instructor and librarian for Klahre House Alternative School in Hood River; Garnetta Wilker, also representing OEMA, is library technology specialist, reading teacher, and webmaster for Lake Oswego Junior High School; and Bob Zybach is Program Manager for ORWW and a doctoral candidate in Environmental Sciences at Oregon State University in Corvallis.
